Every Filipino family wants safe and healthy food on the table. As concerns about food safety and consumer protection continue to grow, experts from the meat industry are set to share their knowledge in an upcoming webinar aimed at helping the public better understand the importance of safe meat handling and inspection.

The National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) has announced the second part of its Meat Safety Webinar Series, scheduled for June 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The online event will be streamed live through the agency's official Facebook page and is open to interested participants.

The webinar will feature two respected experts in the field of meat safety and inspection. Dr. Fernando N. Lontoc, Officer-in-Charge Executive Director of NMIS, will serve as one of the resource speakers. Recognized for his contributions to food safety regulation, Dr. Lontoc helped develop key government policies governing the handling and sale of fresh, chilled, frozen, and thawed meat products in the Philippines.

Joining him is Dr. Jude N. Padasas, a Senior Meat Control Officer and Clinical Instructor in Meat Inspection. He is known for his work in strengthening meat inspection programs and supporting efforts against the distribution of illegal and smuggled meat products. His advocacy focuses on protecting consumers and promoting food safety standards throughout the meat supply chain.

According to NMIS, the webinar aims to raise public awareness about meat safety, food security, consumer protection, and the critical role of meat inspection in safeguarding public health. Participants will gain insights into how government regulations help ensure that meat products sold in markets and establishments meet safety requirements.

Food safety remains a major concern worldwide, as improper handling, storage, and distribution of meat products can increase the risk of foodborne illnesses. Regulatory agencies such as NMIS play a vital role in monitoring meat establishments, conducting inspections, and enforcing standards that help protect consumers.

The agency noted that informed consumers are an important part of a safe food system. Understanding proper meat handling practices and recognizing the importance of inspection and certification can help families make safer food choices.

The webinar is also expected to provide a platform for discussion on current challenges facing the meat industry, including food security concerns, disease prevention, and efforts to maintain consumer confidence in meat products available in the market.

As the country continues to strengthen food safety programs, educational initiatives such as this webinar help bridge the gap between regulators, industry stakeholders, and consumers. By sharing expert knowledge and practical information, NMIS hopes to encourage greater public participation in promoting safe and responsible food practices.

With food safety affecting every household, officials encourage interested participants to join the webinar and learn more about the systems and safeguards that help ensure safe meat reaches Filipino dining tables.
