Under the cloudy skies of Tacurong City, farmers continued working in the fields despite the steady rains of the wet season. In the middle of the muddy rice paddies, agricultural workers carefully applied Unigrow Biofertilizer to young rice plants, showing determination to protect crops and secure a better harvest for local communities.

The activity was held at the City Demonstration Farm Rice Seed Production area in Tacurong City as part of the first application of Unigrow Biofertilizer for the NSIC Rc 27 rice variety. The rice crop is currently at 12 days after transplanting (DAT), a critical stage for early plant development during the wet season.

Farm technicians and local farmers said proper nutrition during the early growth stage is important to help rice plants withstand unpredictable weather, pests, and plant diseases commonly experienced during heavy rains. The use of biofertilizers has become increasingly popular among some farmers because these products may help improve soil health and strengthen crop growth while reducing dependence on chemical-based farm inputs.

The NSIC Rc 27 variety is known among Filipino farmers for its good eating quality and stable yield performance. During the rainy season, however, rice farms often face challenges such as waterlogging, nutrient loss, and pest attacks brought by changing weather patterns. Agricultural experts continue to encourage balanced fertilization and proper farm management to help maintain productivity during these months.

In Tacurong City and nearby farming communities in Mindanao, rice production remains one of the main sources of livelihood for thousands of families. Many farmers are now exploring sustainable farming practices to lower production costs and protect soil quality for future planting seasons.

Supporters of microbial and organic-based fertilizers believe these products can contribute to healthier crops while helping farmers reduce the use of pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, and excessive foliar applications. However, experts also remind farmers to combine organic inputs with proper soil testing, irrigation management, and guidance from local agricultural offices to ensure effective crop production.

The wet season planting period is considered vital for rice-producing provinces across the Philippines as it contributes significantly to the country’s food supply. The Department of Agriculture has continued promoting modern and climate-resilient farming technologies to help farmers cope with extreme weather conditions caused by climate change.

Despite the rain and difficult field conditions, the demonstration activity in Tacurong City highlighted the resilience of Filipino farmers who continue planting and caring for their crops in hopes of achieving a stable harvest.

As the country continues to face challenges in food security and rising farm costs, initiatives that promote sustainable and efficient farming practices may play an important role in supporting local rice production and improving the livelihood of farming communities.
