Behind every scientific breakthrough is an idea worth protecting. As research and innovation continue to shape the future of Philippine fisheries, experts are strengthening efforts to ensure that valuable discoveries are properly managed, protected, and transformed into practical benefits for communities and industries.
The Fisheries Biotechnology Center of the Department of Agriculture–National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (DA-NFRDI) recently launched an Intellectual Property (IP) training program that gathered 34 participants from various NFRDI divisions, centers, and partner institutions.
The training aims to increase awareness and understanding of intellectual property rights among researchers, scientists, and technical personnel involved in fisheries and aquatic research. By strengthening knowledge on innovation management and intellectual property protection, the program seeks to help researchers safeguard their work while promoting the responsible use and commercialization of new technologies.
During the first day of the training, participants attended lectures covering key aspects of intellectual property and technology management. Dr. Eufrocina Atabay discussed milestones and institutional initiatives under intellectual property and technology business management programs. Her presentation highlighted the role of research institutions in creating systems that encourage innovation while protecting the rights of inventors and developers.
Meanwhile, Marlon Ragunton provided an overview of the fundamentals of intellectual property. The session introduced participants to the different forms of IP protection, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and other legal mechanisms that help secure ownership of inventions and creative works.
Experts emphasized that strong intellectual property systems are essential in supporting scientific advancement. Protecting innovations not only recognizes the efforts of researchers but also creates opportunities for technologies to be developed, adopted, and shared responsibly across industries.
For the fisheries sector, biotechnology and research-driven innovations play an increasingly important role in improving aquaculture production, enhancing aquatic resource management, and strengthening food security. Effective intellectual property management helps ensure that these innovations can generate long-term value for both research institutions and the communities they serve.
The training also underscores the government's commitment to fostering a culture of innovation within the agriculture and fisheries sectors. By equipping researchers with the necessary knowledge and tools, institutions can better manage their discoveries and contribute to the country's economic and scientific development.
As research continues to address challenges in food production, sustainability, and resource management, intellectual property protection remains a key component in turning scientific ideas into real-world solutions. Through initiatives like this training program, DA-NFRDI is helping build a stronger foundation for innovation in the Philippine fisheries sector.
