Healthy soil is the foundation of every successful harvest. Recognizing this, the Department of Agriculture is stepping up efforts to equip farmers and local agriculture workers with the knowledge needed to protect land resources and improve farm productivity for future generations.
The Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM), through its Soil Conservation and Management Division (SCMD), conducted three Specialized Capability Enhancement Training sessions on Sustainable Land Management (SLM) under the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Project (MBRP) during May 2026.
The training activities were held in selected municipalities where Sustainable Land Management Exemplar Sites (SLMES) will be established this year. Sessions took place in Dinalupihan, Bataan on May 6–7, Luisiana, Laguna on May 20–21, and Indang, Cavite on May 27–28.
Participants included farmers, local government unit personnel, and representatives from the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Offices. The program aimed to strengthen technical knowledge and practical skills related to sustainable land management, an approach that promotes responsible use of soil, water, and other natural resources while maintaining agricultural productivity.
According to DA-BSWM, sustainable land management plays a critical role in addressing challenges such as soil degradation, erosion, declining soil fertility, and the impacts of climate change. These issues can reduce crop yields and threaten long-term food production if left unaddressed.
Through the training, participants learned techniques and strategies that can help improve soil health, conserve water resources, and enhance farm resilience. The establishment of Sustainable Land Management Exemplar Sites will also serve as demonstration areas where farmers can observe and apply proven conservation practices in their own communities.
The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to support environmental protection and sustainable agriculture within the Manila Bay watershed. By promoting responsible land use practices, the project seeks to contribute not only to agricultural development but also to the rehabilitation of ecosystems that affect water quality and environmental health.
Agriculture experts emphasized that investing in farmer education is essential for achieving long-term food security. Well-informed farmers are better equipped to adopt technologies and practices that increase productivity while preserving natural resources for future generations.
The collaboration among farmers, local government units, and agricultural agencies highlights the importance of a collective approach to land conservation. Through shared knowledge and coordinated action, communities can build stronger and more sustainable agricultural systems.
As climate and environmental challenges continue to affect farming areas across the country, programs like these provide valuable opportunities for farmers to strengthen their skills and adapt to changing conditions.
With improved knowledge and practical experience in sustainable land management, participating communities are expected to contribute to healthier soils, more productive farms, and a more resilient agricultural sector. These efforts support the country's goal of ensuring food security while protecting the natural resources that sustain Filipino agriculture.
