A glass of milk may seem simple, but for many Filipinos, it represents health, opportunity, and hope. In celebration of World Milk Day 2026, the National Dairy Authority–Southern Luzon Department (NDA-SLD) brought these values to life through a community outreach program at the BJMP Lipa City Male Dormitory in Batangas.

Held on June 2 under the theme “Celebrating Women Farmers,” the activity highlighted the importance of nutrition, livelihood development, and inclusivity. The program formed part of the NDA’s continuing mission to improve the well-being of Filipinos while supporting the country’s growing dairy industry.

The NDA delegation was warmly welcomed by officials and personnel of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), led by City Jail Warden JCINSP Lord Byrce Kinao. Around 60 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) and jail personnel participated in the event.

During the program, Dr. Feddik Antonette J. Serrano, Acting Department Manager I of NDA-SLD, emphasized that government services should be accessible to all Filipinos regardless of their circumstances. She encouraged participants to continue striving for better health and personal development while underscoring the agency’s commitment to serving communities from all walks of life.

Nutrition was a key focus of the celebration. Rose Anne Ellorico, Assistant Dairy Safety Officer of NDA-SLD, discussed the health benefits of milk consumption and its role in supporting proper nutrition. Milk is recognized as a valuable source of protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals essential for growth, bone health, and overall well-being.

The event also paid tribute to the contributions of women in agriculture, particularly in the dairy sector. Lovellea C. Pajarit, Vice Chairperson of the Ruminant Raisers of San Antonio, Quezon Agriculture Cooperative (RRSAQ), shared her personal experiences in dairy farming. She spoke about the challenges she faced and the determination required to succeed in the industry.

Her story highlighted the growing role of women in agriculture and demonstrated that dairy farming and livestock production are opportunities open to everyone, regardless of gender. By recognizing women farmers, the celebration aimed to inspire greater participation and inclusivity in the agricultural sector.

As part of the outreach activity, the NDA distributed food packs and locally produced dairy products from RRSAQ. The dairy products were procured through the government’s Sagip Saka Program, which supports local farmers by creating direct market opportunities for their products.

The agency also donated sanitary and hygiene kits to the facility, reinforcing its commitment to promoting health, dignity, and community welfare. The gesture reflected the broader goal of ensuring that support reaches vulnerable sectors while strengthening local agricultural livelihoods.

World Milk Day, observed globally every June 1, serves as a reminder of the important role that milk and dairy products play in nutrition and food security. In the Philippines, initiatives such as this help connect dairy farmers with consumers while promoting healthier communities and sustainable livelihoods.

As the dairy industry continues to grow, efforts that combine nutrition, livelihood support, and social responsibility demonstrate how agriculture can create positive change across different sectors of society.
