Beneath every harvest of rice, vegetables, fruits, and other crops lies a resource that often goes unnoticed but is essential to every Filipino table—healthy soil. This June, the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM) is calling on farmers, communities, and the public to recognize the vital role of soil through the observance of Soil Conservation Month 2026.

The month-long campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting and managing agricultural lands to ensure long-term food security, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. Through educational activities and public engagement, DA-BSWM seeks to encourage greater appreciation of soil as one of the country’s most valuable natural resources.

Soil is the foundation of agriculture. It supports the production of crops that feed millions of Filipinos and provides livelihoods for farming communities across the country. Healthy soil supplies essential nutrients to plants, stores water, supports biodiversity, and helps maintain productive farmlands.

However, agricultural experts continue to warn about the growing threats to soil health, including erosion, land degradation, nutrient depletion, and the impacts of climate change. Unsustainable farming practices and improper land use can reduce soil fertility, affecting crop yields and the income of farmers.

To address these challenges, DA-BSWM continues to promote proper soil management and conservation practices. These include the use of soil testing, balanced fertilization, contour farming, cover cropping, organic matter application, and other sustainable agricultural techniques that help preserve soil quality while increasing farm productivity.

The agency emphasized that soil conservation is not only an agricultural concern but also a national priority. Healthy soils contribute to stable food production, support rural livelihoods, reduce environmental risks, and strengthen the country's ability to adapt to climate-related challenges.

This year’s observance highlights a simple but powerful message: “Lupa: Pagkain, Seguridad, Buhay.” The theme underscores the direct connection between soil health, food availability, economic stability, and the well-being of every Filipino family.

DA-BSWM is encouraging farmers, students, local government units, agricultural stakeholders, and the general public to participate in activities that promote awareness and action toward sustainable land management. By understanding the value of soil and adopting responsible practices, communities can help protect agricultural resources for future generations.

As the Philippines works toward achieving greater food security and agricultural resilience, the protection of soil remains a critical step. Every effort to conserve and improve soil health contributes to stronger farms, better harvests, and a more sustainable future.

This Soil Conservation Month, the message is clear: protecting the land today means safeguarding food, livelihoods, and opportunities for generations to come.
