Hundreds of veterinarians, researchers, students, and animal health professionals gathered in Baguio City with a shared goal—to strengthen animal health services and promote responsible pet ownership across the Philippines.

The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) joined the 2nd Annual Post Graduate Scientific Conference–c.a.N.I.S. 2026 (Companion Animal National Integrated Symposium), held from May 26 to 28, 2026, at the Hotel Supreme Convention Plaza in Baguio City. The event served as a platform for experts and stakeholders to discuss the latest developments, challenges, and opportunities in companion animal medicine and veterinary practice.

During the conference, BAI Director Dr. Christian Daquigan underscored the expanding role of veterinarians in modern society. He said veterinarians are no longer focused solely on treating animals but also play vital roles as public health defenders, researchers, educators, and advocates for animal welfare.

According to Daquigan, companion animal practice has become increasingly important in promoting responsible pet ownership, preventing diseases, enhancing community safety, and protecting public health. As more Filipino households welcome pets into their homes, veterinary services continue to play a critical role in ensuring both animal and human well-being.

The BAI director also stressed the importance of scientific conferences such as c.a.N.I.S. 2026 in encouraging collaboration among government agencies, academic institutions, and private organizations. He noted that strong partnerships are essential in addressing animal health concerns and improving veterinary services nationwide.

“The future of animal health in the Philippines depends on partnerships,” Daquigan said during his message to conference participants. He emphasized that protecting animal health helps safeguard livelihoods, while strengthening veterinary systems contributes to stronger public health outcomes for communities.

As one of the conference’s invited partner organizations, the BAI showcased several of its key regulatory services through an information booth. Among the featured services were Animal Facility Registration, Veterinary Drug and Product Establishment Registration, and Feed Establishment Registration.

These regulatory programs are designed to help ensure that animal facilities, veterinary products, and feed establishments comply with national standards on safety, quality, and animal health. Such measures are important in maintaining a healthy livestock and companion animal sector while supporting consumer confidence and industry growth.

The conference was organized by the Philippine College of Canine Practitioners, Inc. (PCCP) and brought together professionals from different parts of the country. Participants exchanged knowledge and experiences on emerging issues affecting companion animals, veterinary medicine, and animal welfare.

As the veterinary profession continues to evolve, events like c.a.N.I.S. 2026 provide valuable opportunities for learning, collaboration, and innovation. Strengthening animal health systems not only benefits pets and livestock but also contributes to safer communities and a healthier future for all Filipinos.
