In laboratories and research centers across the country, experts are working to develop better technologies that can help Filipino farmers and fiber producers increase productivity and improve their livelihoods.

To support this goal, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) gathered researchers, engineers, and industry experts for a forum focused on innovation and mechanization in the Philippine fiber sector.

Held on May 28, 2026, at the Fiber Processing and Utilization Laboratory inside the BAI Compound in Visayas Avenue, Quezon City, the event brought together key stakeholders to discuss ways to improve existing fiber production and processing machines. The forum was organized by PhilFIDA’s Fiber Utilization and Technology Division under the supervision of Officer-in-Charge Chief Maritess M. Puspus.

Among the participants were representatives from the University of the Philippines Los Baños, including Engr. Ronel S. Pangan of BIOMECH, Dr. Omar F. Zubia of the Institute of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, and engineers from the Agricultural Machinery Testing and Evaluation Center (AMTEC). PhilFIDA officials and technical personnel also took part in the discussions.

The forum served as a platform for experts to exchange ideas on modernizing machinery used in the fiber industry, improving processing methods, and identifying future opportunities for research and development. Participants discussed how technology can help increase efficiency, reduce labor costs, and improve the quality of fiber products produced by Filipino farmers and processors.

PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold I. Atienza emphasized the importance of mechanization in strengthening the country's fiber industry. He noted that modern technologies can help improve productivity while promoting sustainability and competitiveness in both local and international markets.

During the event, Engr. Pepito M. Soriano III presented several technologies developed by PhilFIDA, along with ongoing research projects designed to support the growth of the sector. These initiatives aim to provide practical solutions that can benefit farmers, processors, and other stakeholders involved in fiber production.

The Philippine fiber industry plays an important role in the country's agricultural economy. The Philippines is globally recognized as a major producer of high-quality natural fibers, including abaca, which is widely used in specialty papers, handicrafts, textiles, and industrial applications. Continued investment in research, innovation, and mechanization is seen as essential to maintaining the industry's competitiveness amid evolving market demands.

The activity also included a tour of the Fiber Processing and Utilization Laboratory, allowing participants to observe PhilFIDA's ongoing research efforts and technological innovations firsthand. The visit provided opportunities for collaboration and knowledge-sharing among researchers and industry partners.

PhilFIDA said the forum aligns with the government's broader efforts to modernize Philippine agriculture through science, technology, and strategic partnerships. By working closely with academic institutions and research organizations, the agency hopes to accelerate innovation and support the sustainable development of the country's fiber sector.

As the demand for high-quality natural fibers continues to grow, stronger cooperation among government agencies, researchers, and industry stakeholders may help create new opportunities for Filipino farmers while ensuring the long-term growth of one of the country's valuable agricultural industries.
