Fresh faces joined the country’s food safety workforce this week as newly hired meat inspectors took their oath to help protect Filipino consumers and strengthen meat inspection services nationwide.

The National Meat Inspection Service officially welcomed five newly hired Meat Inspectors III during a hybrid oath-taking ceremony held on May 25, 2026.

The ceremony was led by Officer-in-Charge Executive Director Fernando N. Lontoc, who administered the oath and reminded the new inspectors of their responsibility in ensuring food safety and protecting public health.

Introduced by Chief Administrative Officer Katheryn S. Perez, the newly appointed Meat Inspectors III are Benito R. Laplana Jr., Jega Margaux F. Perez, Marrianne C. Hipol-Tumanda, Camille Bianca P. Salinas, and Caezar Lucas S. Sombrito.

In his message, Lontoc emphasized the importance of upholding the agency’s core values of Professionalism, Integrity, Teamwork, Accountability, and God-centeredness, collectively known within the agency as PITAG.

He encouraged the newly hired personnel to remain committed to excellence in public service and to carry out their duties with honesty and dedication, especially in maintaining safe and quality meat products for Filipino consumers.

Meanwhile, Deputy Executive Director Roberto S. Umali thanked the Human Resource Merit Promotion and Selection Board for carefully selecting qualified and competent personnel to join the agency.

According to NMIS officials, strengthening the workforce is an important step in improving meat inspection services across the country. Meat inspectors play a vital role in checking slaughterhouses, meat establishments, and processing facilities to ensure that meat products sold in markets are safe for public consumption.

Food safety continues to be a major concern in the Philippines, particularly with the growing demand for meat products and the continuing threat of animal diseases such as African Swine Fever. Government agencies have been increasing efforts to strengthen inspection systems, improve monitoring, and maintain public confidence in the country’s food supply.

The NMIS is responsible for enforcing national meat inspection standards and ensuring compliance with sanitation and food safety regulations. Its inspectors are tasked with monitoring meat handling and processing to prevent the spread of contamination and disease.

Officials said adding more trained personnel will help improve the agency’s ability to conduct inspections and deliver services more efficiently nationwide.

The oath-taking ceremony also highlighted the importance of public service in protecting the health and welfare of Filipino families. Authorities reminded the new inspectors that their work directly contributes to consumer safety and the overall integrity of the food industry.

As the agency continues to expand and strengthen its workforce, NMIS said it remains committed to delivering reliable meat inspection services and ensuring that safe meat products reach communities across the country.
