PH, Denmark Sign Fisheries Pact for Sustainable Growth

Healthy oceans and abundant fisheries are vital to the livelihood of millions of Filipinos. The Philippines and Denmark reached another milestone in their long-standing relationship after signing a Partnership Agreement on June 24, 2026, aimed at strengthening cooperation in fisheries research, innovation, and sustainable resource management.

The agreement builds on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2019 between the Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) and the Royal Danish Embassy in Manila. Since then, both sides have worked together on projects that improve the Philippines' fisheries research capabilities, particularly in stock assessment, scientific surveys, and technology validation.

Under the new partnership, the Philippines will gain greater access to advanced fisheries technologies, technical expertise, and capacity-building programs that are expected to enhance the country's ability to manage and conserve its marine resources.

The collaboration also aims to improve fish production and strengthen the country's food security by promoting science-based fisheries management and sustainable fishing practices. These efforts are expected to help protect marine ecosystems while ensuring that future generations will continue to benefit from the country's rich aquatic resources.

Another important component of the agreement is the conduct of fisheries surveys and scientific assessments that will provide more reliable data for policy-making and resource management. The partnership will also strengthen fisheries monitoring and maritime awareness within Philippine waters, including the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), helping authorities make informed decisions on the protection and sustainable use of marine resources.

The fisheries sector remains a significant contributor to the Philippine economy, providing employment and livelihood opportunities for millions of Filipinos, particularly those living in coastal communities. Strengthening scientific research, technology adoption, and international cooperation is seen as a key step toward improving productivity while protecting the country's fisheries for the long term.

The signing of the agreement is also significant as it coincides with the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Denmark. The milestone reflects the enduring partnership between the two nations and their shared commitment to sustainable development, innovation, environmental stewardship, and responsible management of marine resources.
