For many aspiring entrepreneurs in the fisheries sector, access to technology, training, and business support can be the key to turning innovative ideas into successful enterprises. As the demand for sustainable aquaculture and fisheries development continues to grow, government agencies are strengthening programs that help bridge the gap between research and real-world business opportunities.

The Department of Agriculture–National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (DA-NFRDI), through its AquaBiz School–Technology Business Incubation (ABS-TBI) Program, recently conducted its 2026 Midyear Performance Review and Evaluation to assess progress and strengthen support for fisheries innovation and entrepreneurship.

Held from June 15 to 19, 2026, at the Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Center in Butong, Taal, Batangas, the five-day activity brought together members of the ABS-TBI Program Management Team. The review focused on evaluating accomplishments during the first half of the year and identifying strategies to improve program implementation in the coming months.

Participants examined key achievements, reviewed the selection process for incubatees, discussed operational challenges, and shared best practices that can help improve the delivery of incubation services. The activity also provided an opportunity to develop action plans aimed at strengthening support for entrepreneurs engaged in fisheries and aquaculture-related ventures.

In her message during the event, NFRDI Executive Director Dr. Maria Theresa Mutia emphasized the important role of the program in promoting technology adoption and innovation within the fisheries sector. She highlighted the continued growth of the ABS-TBI initiative and its contribution to technology transfer, entrepreneurship development, and business incubation.

Technology business incubation programs serve as platforms that help innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs transform scientific knowledge into commercially viable products and services. Through mentoring, training, technical assistance, and business development support, incubatees are given opportunities to strengthen their enterprises and improve their chances of long-term success.

The fisheries sector remains a vital component of Philippine agriculture, providing livelihoods for millions of Filipinos and contributing significantly to food security. However, the industry faces ongoing challenges, including environmental pressures, resource management concerns, and the need for modern technologies that can improve productivity and sustainability.

Programs such as AquaBiz are designed to address these challenges by encouraging innovation and supporting the commercialization of research-based technologies. By helping entrepreneurs develop sustainable business models, the initiative contributes to job creation, economic growth, and the modernization of the fisheries industry.

Officials noted that continuous evaluation is necessary to ensure that programs remain responsive to the needs of participants and stakeholders. Reviewing accomplishments and identifying areas for improvement allow program managers to enhance service delivery and maximize the impact of government investments in innovation and entrepreneurship.

As the ABS-TBI Program moves forward, NFRDI remains committed to advancing technology adoption and supporting the next generation of fisheries entrepreneurs. Through stronger partnerships, innovation-driven solutions, and effective incubation services, the program aims to help build a more competitive, resilient, and sustainable fisheries sector for the future.
