CLSU Launches Webinar Series on Climate-Smart Rice Farming

As climate change continues to affect farming communities across the Philippines, many rice farmers are facing growing challenges from unpredictable weather, pest outbreaks, plant diseases, and water shortages. These threats can reduce harvests, increase production costs, and affect the country's food supply.

To help farmers adapt and become more resilient, a three-part webinar series on Climate-Smart Rice Farming is being offered to share science-based solutions and modern agricultural technologies that can improve rice production under changing environmental conditions.

The educational program aims to provide farmers, students, agricultural workers, researchers, and other stakeholders with practical knowledge on innovative approaches that can help strengthen rice farming systems. Experts will discuss strategies designed to improve productivity, reduce risks, and support sustainable agriculture.

The first webinar focuses on Climate-Resilient Hybrid Rice Varieties. Participants will learn about rice varieties developed to better withstand environmental stresses such as drought, excessive rainfall, and other climate-related challenges. Experts will explain how these varieties can contribute to more stable and reliable rice production even under difficult growing conditions.

The second session will tackle Integrated Pest and Disease Management, an approach that combines various methods to control pests and diseases while minimizing environmental impact. Farmers will gain insights into sustainable techniques that can help protect crops, reduce losses, and improve farm productivity without relying solely on chemical interventions.

The third and final webinar will introduce the Mobile Solar-Powered Irrigation System (MSPIS), an innovative technology designed to provide a more efficient and environmentally friendly irrigation solution. The system uses solar energy to help address water supply challenges, particularly in areas where access to traditional irrigation infrastructure may be limited.

Agricultural experts have long emphasized the importance of climate-smart farming practices as the country experiences more frequent extreme weather events. Adopting new technologies and science-based farming methods can help farmers strengthen their resilience while maintaining stable food production.

The webinar series highlights the growing role of research and innovation in modern agriculture. By connecting farmers with the latest scientific developments, organizers hope to encourage the adoption of technologies that can improve efficiency, reduce costs, and support long-term sustainability.
