Inside a conference room filled with charts, reports, and research data, fisheries experts spent three days sharpening their skills to better understand how fish products move from coastal communities to local markets. The training aimed to improve research that could help strengthen the livelihoods of Filipino fisherfolk and boost the country’s fisheries sector.

Technical staff from the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute participated in a three-day training workshop on May 12 to 14, 2026, focused on improving their skills in processing, analyzing, and presenting Value Chain Analysis (VCA) data.

The activity was conducted by the Fisheries Postharvest Research and Development Division at the NFRDI Conference Room as part of the ongoing Philippine Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency or FISHCORE Project.

According to organizers, the workshop aims to strengthen research capabilities related to fisheries value chains, particularly for high-value and managed stock species found in Fisheries Management Areas 6 and 9. These areas cover important fishing grounds that support coastal livelihoods and local food supply.

The training was facilitated by Paul Joseph Ramirez from University of the Philippines Los Baños. He provided participants with practical lessons on value chain analysis principles, data interpretation, and report preparation to improve the quality of research outputs.

Value Chain Analysis is used to study how products move through different stages of production, processing, distribution, and marketing. In fisheries, this process helps identify challenges and opportunities that affect fisherfolk, traders, processors, and consumers.

Researchers said understanding the value chain is important in improving income opportunities for fishing communities while ensuring efficient and sustainable use of marine resources. Through detailed analysis, agencies can identify gaps in postharvest handling, transportation, market access, and product pricing.

The FISHCORE Project supports efforts to strengthen fisheries management and coastal resiliency in vulnerable communities across the Philippines. It also promotes sustainable fishing practices and better resource management to protect marine ecosystems and improve food security.

The Philippines is among the world’s top producers of fish and marine products, with millions of Filipinos relying on the fisheries sector for livelihood and daily food supply. However, the industry continues to face challenges such as climate change, overfishing, postharvest losses, and unstable market conditions.

Officials said improving technical knowledge among fisheries researchers is essential in developing better policies and programs that can support both environmental sustainability and economic growth in coastal areas.

The workshop also highlighted the importance of partnerships between government agencies and academic institutions in advancing scientific research for agriculture and fisheries development.

As the country continues to strengthen coastal resiliency and fisheries management programs, experts believe that better research and data analysis will play a major role in protecting marine resources and improving the lives of Filipino fisherfolk.
