Pieces of discarded ocean waste have been transformed into powerful works of art that now carry stories of hope, survival, and environmental protection. Across the country, artists inspired by coastal life and marine conservation are using creativity to highlight the struggles and resilience of Filipino fishing communities.

The national category of the FISHCOREXHIBIT: Raising Awareness on Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency Art Competition officially opens online on May 26, 2026, featuring artworks from regions covered by the FishCoRe Project. The exhibit showcases sculptures and creative pieces made to promote awareness about fisheries protection, coastal resiliency, and marine conservation.

Organizers said the competition aims to encourage Filipinos to appreciate the importance of healthy oceans and sustainable fisheries while recognizing the talent of local artists who use recycled and ocean waste materials in their creations.

The artworks reflect the daily lives of fisherfolk, the beauty of coastal communities, and the growing environmental challenges affecting Philippine waters. Many pieces were crafted using discarded plastics, fishing materials, and other waste collected from coastal areas, turning pollution into meaningful visual messages.

Regional competitions were previously held in several parts of the country, including the Cordillera Administrative Region, National Capital Region, Regions 1, 3, 4A, 4B, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 13. Winning entries from these areas advanced to the national level, where they will compete for top recognition.

The judging of entries is scheduled on May 27, 2026. A panel of judges will evaluate the artworks based on creativity, craftsmanship, relevance to marine conservation, and overall impact in promoting awareness about fisheries and coastal resiliency.

The awarding ceremony will follow on May 28, 2026, where outstanding artists and their works will be recognized for helping raise awareness about the need to protect the country’s coastal and marine resources.

The Philippines is considered one of the world’s leading coastal and marine nations, with millions of Filipinos depending on fisheries and coastal resources for food and livelihood. However, the country also faces threats from climate change, marine pollution, illegal fishing, and habitat destruction, which continue to affect fishing communities and marine ecosystems.

Environmental advocates said art plays an important role in helping communities better understand these challenges. Through visual storytelling, artists are able to connect people emotionally to issues affecting the oceans and encourage stronger public participation in conservation efforts.

The FishCoRe initiative continues to support projects that strengthen fisheries management, coastal resiliency, and environmental awareness in vulnerable communities. Organizers hope the exhibit will inspire more Filipinos, especially the youth, to value and protect the country’s seas and coastal resources.

As the national competition unfolds, many are expected to witness how creativity and environmental advocacy can come together to send a powerful message about protecting the oceans for future generations.
