Farmers and fisherfolk gathered in Abucay, Bataan with hopes of learning new ways to improve harvests and protect their livelihood amid changing weather conditions and rising production costs. The celebration became more meaningful as government agencies introduced programs aimed at strengthening sustainable agriculture in local communities.

The Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM) took part in the 2026 Municipal Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month celebration organized by the local government of Abucay on May 13, 2026.

During the event, DA-BSWM highlighted the importance of Sustainable Land Management (SLM), a farming approach that focuses on protecting soil quality, conserving water resources, and improving long-term agricultural productivity. Officials said the program is designed to help farmers maintain healthy farmland while reducing environmental damage caused by unsustainable practices.

The activity gathered local farmers, fisherfolk, agricultural workers, and local officials in support of programs that promote food security and sustainable farming. The bureau was recognized for its continuing efforts to assist rural communities through soil and water conservation initiatives.

Sustainable Land Management has become increasingly important in the Philippines as many agricultural areas face problems such as soil erosion, declining soil fertility, flooding, drought, and the effects of climate change. Experts say proper land and water management can help farmers increase productivity while protecting natural resources for future generations.

The DA-BSWM continues to implement programs that educate farmers on efficient water use, soil conservation, organic matter improvement, and climate-resilient farming technologies. These initiatives are seen as important tools in helping local agriculture adapt to extreme weather conditions that regularly affect farming communities across the country.

Farmers attending the celebration were also given opportunities to learn more about government services and support programs available for the agriculture and fisheries sectors. Community activities like Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month are conducted annually in many provinces to recognize the hard work and contributions of Filipino food producers.

Agriculture remains one of the key economic sectors in Bataan and nearby provinces, where many families depend on farming and fishing as their main source of income. Government agencies continue to encourage stronger cooperation between local governments and national agencies to improve rural development and strengthen food production.

The participation of DA-BSWM in the celebration also underscored the government’s wider campaign to promote sustainable agriculture under the “Bagong Pilipinas” initiative. Officials stressed that improving soil and water management is essential in securing stable food supply and better livelihood opportunities for farmers and fisherfolk.

As climate challenges continue to affect agricultural communities, experts believe that sustainable farming practices and proper resource management will play a major role in protecting the future of Philippine agriculture.
